New bird species at El Roble Birding

A couple of weeks ago we received a group of avid birders led by Jumabita Project. We had a great time! Great company, great weather, and most of all: great birds! In total, we registered more than 120 species.

The best news is that, among them, we saw ten new species for El Roble Birding! That hadn't happened in a while. We are now approaching 300 species (check them out here)!

Let's start with one of the most important ones:

Agami heron (Agamia agami). Conservation status (IUCN Red List): Vulnerable. Very few observations in the region. We'll keep an eye and see if she becomes a regular and if there are more around.

Another amazing observation (unfortunately no photo): Saffron-headed parrot (Pyrilia pyrilia). Conservation status (IUCN Red List): Near Threatened. We saw three individuals on flight and vocalizing.

A species we were expecting but hadn't seen: Beautiful woodpecker (Melanerpes pulcher). An endemic species to Colombia, this nice woodpecker's unmistakable song was heard in the forest's canopy and seen doing what it does best: pecking wood.

We also completed the list for the three Notharchus puffbirds present in the region! The pied puffbird is a regular, but the other two were missing. Check them out:

Black-breasted puffbird (Notharchus pectoralis)

White-necked puffbird (Notharchus hyperrhynchus)

We also saw a Fulvous-vented euphonia (Euphonia fulvicrissa) and an Acadian flycatcher (Empidonax virescens):

Fulvous-vented euphonia (female)

Acadian flycatcher (migratory)

High up in the forest's canopy we registered a Yellow-backed tanager too (Hemithraupis flavicollis) and then, hiding in the shadows, a Ruddy-tailed flycatcher (Terenotriccus erythrurus).

Yellow-backed tanager (male).

Ruddy-tailed flycatcher.

Last, but not least, we confirmed the presence of Brown-throated parakeets (Eupsittula pertinax), something we had also anticipated.

Brown-throated parakeet.

We know there's more species to find and we are working hard to do it. We are positive that we'll reach the 300 mark soon! Come help us do it!
